Matt Henry's Blog (48)

Returning to the source

Hello friends,

I've been absent from the site for some time, at least in a "writing" manner.  My family and I have had a turbulent 2011, including relocating from Australia to the US, rather unexpectedly.

One of the sustaining energies for me has been my spiritual perspective gifted by Creation Spirituality and this community. An understanding of via negativa does not, of course, avoid the sometimes painful gifts it has.

Alas, I'm slowly finding my way…

Theodore Richards - CSC Event in Chicago

Hi all,

I've been rather absent from the site lately, moving unexpectedly from Australia to the US and stepping into new role...  One of the things I had to do for sanity's sake was let go of a teaching commitment I had made.  I was scheduled to teach a class on the Monday of the Chicago CSC Event, but my new job, which includes directing a summer camp, was squeezing my time into…

Recent radio Interview with Matt Fox

Original link: http://www.radiocurious.org/2011/01/18/matthew-fox-creating-a-new-spirituality/

In 1988, rather than comply with an ecclesiastical summons issued by then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, to move to Chicago and give up his work on Creation Spirituality in Oakland California, Matthew Fox, a Dominican Priest, left the Dominican Order, remained in Oakland, and…

Re-worked Christmas Carols

I thought I'd share these after Christmas Day (still in the liturgical season for those who note such things in that tradition), so as not to cause any damaging disturbances to anyone's Christmas plans.

My happy little hippy faith community, ecofaith, has a creative pastor, Rev Dr Jason John, who enjoys the challenge of rewording songs.  So I credit him and blame him for the carols linked here: …

Summer Solstice!

Enjoyed a wonderful summer solstice day (southern hemisphere)... mowed a great maze in the 1.5 metre-tall grass for the kids...  had a swim in the neighbour's pool (they're on vacation... sshhh!)... had our EcoFaith friends over for a full moon solstice party. Very very fun, and a great celebration including a sun mandala/tapate, wreaths made from kiwi fruit vines.  Sang some songs including my daughters' songs:

Jess (6):

The Sun is the sky

And its shining…

The chicken is now eight days old. I have as little an idea as to its name as the poor creature has about the existence of sunshine, given this past week of rain…

The danger in attempting to say anything of substance AT ALL about spirituality, with a puppy as the starting point, is that it will devolve into sentimental feelgoodedness. So I…

A Theology of Chocolate Easter Eggs

Understanding Easter is a bit more challenging in the southern hemisphere, where it coincides with the onset of Autumn, the beginning of nature's letting go for a season. Hardly rebirth; at least, not the colourful bits. I remember happily the Easters I spent in Michigan, where the Dante-esque months of winter (I'm a cold wimp) finally would subside and spring would creep, peep then explode onto the scene. Now, THAT made some sense in conjunction with the rebirth/resurrection…

Folsom Prison Blues

I first learned about Johnny Cash (not a musician known primarily by my generation) from Bono, the Irish singer/songwriter/frontman of the band U2 (musicians known intimately by my generation). U2 had written a song for Cash to sing on their album "Zooropa," a straggling dark tragedy of spiritual angst called The Wanderer. I was hooked. Bono's description of the man just enticed me further:

"Locust and honey...not since John the Baptist has there been a voice like that… Continue

If I only had some chalk...

I've just returned from a quick trip to the hardware store, and noticed the following message chalked onto the sidewalk at the crossing:

Call on Jesus

You are more than a monkey

You are a child of God.

I guess it's an invitation to a faith perspective and a statement about science/religion tied up and left for passers-by to observe in a lovely blue chalk. It takes up about a half-square of concrete in a way that almost invites a response.

Well,… Continue

Finding Creation Spirituality (19): "Symphony of Science"

Have you seen this video (below)? It's amazing. David Attenborough, Jane Goodall and Carl Sagan singing together...

It uses voice pitch-altering software (called Auto-tune) used in pop music production. Why do I find Creation Spirituality in watching it?

* it's a great example of applying new wisdom and learnings (in this case a computer software technology) with voices of our ancestors and elders. So it honours both.

* it mixes and gathers in wisdom where it exists -… Continue

Finding Creation Spirituality (18): "The Future belongs to the most compelling story."

Occasionally one of the people whose mailing lists I'm on wanders from the US or UK into Australia, and normally they hit the big cities and do their thing then head home. Rabbi Michael Lerner (editor of Tikkun Magazine) was just here a couple of weeks ago, but nowhere near my humble little town. So I was pleasantly surprised to get word of Drew Dellinger's poetry gig in the even humbler hamlet of Nimbin, a few hours north of me.

Nimbin is known for pot-smoking and hemp… Continue

Finding Creation Spirituality (17): "Global warming and political meltdown"

No, nothing here about Copenhagen... I haven't yet read much of what's unfolding there. But let me tell you about something that's happened here...

The heat from the climate change debate in Australian politics, resulted last week in what can only be described as the complete meltdown of the conservative opposition party. We have the Westminster system of government here, and presently the centre-left Labor Party is in power; the centre-right Liberal (oxymoronically named) Party is… Continue
