How did you come to discover Creation Spirituality?
I grew up in the upper midwest, USA and Earth-based spirituality has always naturally been my worldview and reflected in my art. The theology named as Creation Spirituality (CS) by Matthew Fox found me in the lovely book Original Blessing in summer 2001.

After events of 9-1-1 I became even more obsessed with "saving the world" (from human-made ecological destruction) and have studied CS intentionally full-time since, beginning at UCS (University of CS) in Oakland, CA in January 2002. I'll receive my D.Min. from the now Wisdom University (WU) this spring during the 2010 CSC Gathering.

Returning to Minnesota after that first intensive in 2002, I discovered a progressive christian community called, "Sacred Journey" at the largest United Methodist church in Minneapolis (HAUMC) under the leadership of Rev. Sally Johnson, Steve Blom, and Bob Brinkley since 1994. The services are creation-centered and planned around the four paths. What luck!

Howard Hanger of the Jubilee Community visited S.J. many times, and in 2006 we bought Matthew Fox to the Twin Cities for several events. I immediately participated on the steering committee for CSC, Inc. at his request that June, served briefly on the Board, and have volunteered for the website and most of the annual Gatherings since.

CS has a natural "goal" in the Via Transformativa with conscious work towards wholeness, especially ecojustice. My artwork towards these ends began with my 2003 contemporary icon, "Sophia, Divine Wisdom," and more recently with a series of larger-than-life ancestor peace activists, the "Dancing Icons," and other archetypes which appear at various conferences, demonstrations and parades across the country.

I have formal training from Friends of Creation Spirituality (FCS) in The Cosmic Mass (TCM) and have been lucky enough to participate with my large puppets in celebrations in several states. Also studied intensively with Joanna Macy at the Center for Interfaith Relations (CIR) in Louisville and am a regional facilitator the Work That Reconnects (WTR). Additionally have worked with Andrew Harvey's "Sacred Activism" and Starhawk's "Magickal Activism."

This adventure has been like finding a lost tribe with members around the globe, as well as right here at home in Minnesota!

Looks like you're having a very productive period, Mary. I know David will love seeing some of your puppets once you get to know each other. He's a very active, visual, celebrative and public kind of artist. I know he misses the art community terribly. He's at the Vent Center.

That monarch butterfly is just so celebrative, fun and rejoiceful. (You can use my made-up word if you wish :).)

Hi Mary
Thanks for your affirmation! I'd have replied sooner, but I've been in bed with pneumonia for several days and am finally getting caught up with my communities. I think when I describe my spirituality words tend to get in the way so I try to use as few as possible. I especially enjoyed seeing your art. Molly

Hi! I'm just to know this site. I'll be spending more time reading and communicating as more snow falls on Minnesota. Lynn

Hi Mary-No I haven't been to a cosmic mass yet. My husband and I hope to someday get to one. We have both found Creation Spirituality so liberating as it helps us help others to know that Christianity needn't be limited to sin - redemption teachings.

Mary, your art reminds me of a group in the Cities with their puppets. Rochester's peace group made a dove - like your eagle - last year out of bedsheets. They are awesome and demand attention! We occasionally get to the Cities for liturgy at Spirit of St Stephen's across the street from the Art Center; the community rents from a universal church, if I remember correctly. Your art and photos are inspiring, as well as your dedication to educating yourself. We have not been to Duluth in many years. Peace, Elaine

Yep it was taken from a photo of me at an event where I had a facepainter paint an ivy vine. Hope all is well in your world.
