Profile Information

How did you come to discover Creation Spirituality?
Reading a book by Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer. I think it was his "Jesus Against Christianity". Other influences have been: J. Philip Newell's work on Celtic Christianity, Dom Helder Camara, Desmond Tutu, Scottish poet Kenneth White (if you haven't read him, you should), Mary Oliver, Blue Mound, Minnesota, Thich Nhat Hanh, Meister Ekhart, Hafiz, Rumi and many, many others. The world is far too fecund for an arid, stern and forbidding Spirituality to have any appeal or meaning, which is something that I struggled with for far too long.

I'm a writer, blogger, and retired mental health professional. Before that I spent 4 years as an American Baptist minister. I consider myself a nontraditional Christian.

I'm from Seattle, WA, have lived in California, Illinois and Minnesota (Luverne, Marshall and Minneapolis, though not all at the same time). My wife and I moved to Sapporo, Japan at the end of March this year, to be closer to her family.

My blog is at www.tostadaspeaks.blogspot.com where I am known as Jorge Tostada and have the nickname "Toasty". Jorge Tostada is a nickname name I got at a Mexican restaurant near Seattle because I ordered tostadas (chicken with whole beans) more often than anything else on the menu. I liked it so well that I decided to use it as my blogger name.

This quote is from Lewis Mehl-Madrona, M.D., Ph.D., Oglalla-Cree psychiatrist whom I met several years ago at a seminar near Seattle, Washington. I use it as a title for this next quote from him, which speaks to my spirituality and my experience.

"Through my studies of people i various states of health, disease, and transformation between the two, I have realized that we are inextricably embedded in a world of interconnections. Solitary is an illusion, as is self-determination. I… Continue

Two new books by George Polley: The Old Man and The Monkey and Grandfather Stories

Posted on March 29, 2009 at 6:51am 1 Comment

As a writer, I am always exited when something of mine is published, and I am especially excited about the recent publication of these two books, both set here on the island of Hokkaido, Japan where my wife and I live. The first, "The Old Man and The Monkey" is a book about friendship, specifically the friendship between an elderly man and a large "snow" monkey named Yukitaro, which is "snow monkey" in Japanese. Here is a description of the story, from the Introduction:

Hi George...yeah...seems like I am married to this idea...keep forgetting that I am married to this concept and/or calling....so best "get on with it"...and keep those visions as a priority..I tend to be so attention deficit with shinier brighter toys and ideas and I really need to focus and quite being such an idea loving "butterfly"... :)

Just when I thought I was bereft of friends three strangers came and knocked on my door today. I’m blessed.

Hi George--
I am working with our presbytery, a judicatory like the bishop, only we are all part of it, there is no one person responsible for oversight. It is exciting, and challenging.
Enjoy your writing!
Peace,
Wendy

Toasty? I have missed you...found a site that sure looks like you...am honored to find you there...I am endeavoring to be sober with great results...but with the booze out of the way the underlying currents of emotional chaos are emerging, with vengeance...how much of my life have I wasted being wasted?...how much do I have to do to set my two feet on the ground and be proud to be who I am?...have certainly appreciated your conversations in the past...hope more are to come...be well, do good works and keep in touch..Carl

Hi George,
Your name comes up a lot when it comes to book reviews and publishing...so I have this pretty serious collection of poems, many almost epic poems...that I have kept on a shelf for a long time...I would like to explore getting them published...any suggestions?

Hi George,

How fabulous that you live in Japan (and near the snow monekys?)...it is a long-held dream of mine to visit the snow monkeys...
I'm happy to reply via this format, however is there another way to communicate? I'm not sure the whole community is interested in the details of my queries regarding looking for new consciousness book reviewers and/or posting book reviews...?
As for myself, I am a literary freelance editor and writer in the new consciousness/ spiritual genre. My editing website: www.sacredwriting.com. I still work with WU (formerly UCS) dissertation students as well. Last year (gulp!) the better-known titles I edited were Infinite Possibilities by Mike Dooley, and The Physics of Miracles by Richard Bartlett. I am also Review Editor for New Consciousness Review (www.ncreview.com), and you can see my reviews on said site. I also post these reviews on Amazon. it is n this role that I am seeking interested book reviewers to join the NCreview team. It is a volunteer position, but we get free books and a profile page on the website.

Additionally I am a coach/mentor in the Portland OR area, although I'm working toward developing my website(s) so that this element of my service can be more global. A transplant from the Bay area, I love Portland (although could use a little more sunshine in the winter) and live with my husband and cat in a townhouse. Recently, my 87-year old early Alzheimers Mom has come to live with us which is a gift for us all. I am originally and long ago from Toronto, Canada.

Oh yes, I worked with Matt Fox at UCS with Mel Bricker and then as co-director of communications for several years - -and later as an independent contractor.

Happy New Year! and my gratitude to all who gave me such a warm welcome.
Cheers
Julie

Thank you for the warm welcome. I am a "closet" writer :-) I look forward to reading others writings and perhaps learn as I do.
