Everything you need to know to co-create The Cosmic Mass in your community
Thanks Nicole. I shared Justin's work because it caught a lot of what young aboriginal people are thinking about...I didn't think about a performing art piece as part of the Mass, just that there is a lot of untapped talent in youth...and Justin did a part of this....he is open to the cosmic mass so I will be talking about it more..he's into that techno stuff way more than I - I must admit, I'm old school and like music with a beat...but I hope that this will be a community decision as part of my process will be to hold communtiy and/or neighbourhood meetings with our people to discuss this...so to have that process happen in response to what is being taught by your program will be fascinating I think..
Yes, using the lower "chakra's" as Matthew has been known to say is very much a balance that western society needs and to a great degree I think that our people are still relatively in touch with the lower chakra's or experience and energies in our lives....so this is exciting...
We'll talk when the Creator wants us to so keep in touch...cheerz and blessings.
Comment by Nicole Porcaro on February 1, 2012 at 5:23am Bruce, Thanks for posting Fluidity! I thought it was great and definitely appropriate for a cosmic mass.
The important thing that makes a mass different from a performance is the engagement with the participants/congregation - keeping it experiential.
So, when including elements that are "sacred theater" or a performance-like, it is important to ground it back into the group experience so that it is inclusive, responsive... and engaging, so that the energy continues to move.
Every part of the mass/ritual should be in alignment with the over all intention of the gathering and every piece that is included should support the movement of energy through the 4 paths.
I'm excited to get into more depth and explore all of this in the CM training! We are still working out the date the training will begin...And I see you're already rollin' Bruce, so Woo Hoo, keep at it!!!
This video is an attached piece of work done by a young aboriginal kid that I have known since his childhood. He is very talented and I was very impressed with this piece of work that he did. He is both a supporter of Chavez, a born again Christian and a remarkable thinker for the future. He, at 20 years old, "gets it" with respect to the Cosmic Mass...I hope to get him involved. Can you give this a view and share your thoughts about how a young thinker and creator lke this can be incorporated into an Aboriginal Cosmic Mass? Thanks

Its not TCM, but clearly its related! The need to bring the body back to worship is being felt round our beautiful planet.
Comment by Nicole Porcaro on October 19, 2011 at 5:07am Hi Bruce, I will certainly keep you in the loop as far a future CM training as well as everyone in this group! This site has some materials I've posted since '09 related to TCM, but this group hasn't ever been a "training".
Official TCM training has been either through classes held at UCS, such as Yehudit and I attended, where we had hands on practice working on the 'core team'. Or, folks have been trained through the certificate intensives which were held in '05, '06 & '07 in Oakland. Graduates from the trainings have produced Cosmic Masses themselves not listed on the tcm.com site of past masses.
Some who have attended the certificate trainings, like the Worship Jam team in PA (Gail, Bob & Tim) are sharing with others how to bring elements of TCM into regular worship such as the 4paths... like they are offering this weekend in their Playshop.
Matthew and Friends of Creation Spirituality hold the copyright to the title and description of 'The Cosmic Mass'. This is why specific "trainings" have been created so that the TCM holds true to its form and theology and does not get confused with other rituals or celebrations that may not be grounded in Creation Spirituality.
I've included a "discussion" to specifically outline the components of TCM :)
Thank you Nicole and Yehudit...those points are already birthing this aboriginal cosmic mass in Vancouver. I noted in reviewing the Masses listed on your site Nicole that there were two Native American Mass and one mass that may be Native entitled "All My Relations" which -as you may know - is a Sioux ending of prayer,..
Yehudit, I look forward to your ideas on music and stuff like that ...I am thinking of writing a small concept paper on how I see doing this...what has been given me so far in my "minds eye" as they say....
Nicole, I came across your website and have done some more reading and "watching" on that site (through Matthew Fox's website) and that has been very helpful...you were mentioning earlier discussions on this thread...I went back as far as 2009 but couldn't find what you were referring to...
In any case, I would be interested in the training as well....so keep me in the loop...
Comment by Yehudit Steinberg on October 18, 2011 at 8:55pm Nicole,
I recorded every radio show on cassette tape and they are stored. Also wrote a script for every show which included the playlist . They are in print, have to dig to find them in computer files. The show ran for almost 3 years, twice a month. I've been playing around with a cloud streaming program to put my sets online. Also was a Barefoot Boogie and Dance Jam DJ during that time, too.
For the past 7 years I have been developing custom wedding ceremonies and celebrations inspired by TCM, combined with the Kabalah dance I created for the Jewish community. This takes most of my time... but the music and the work we did on TCM is very close to my heart.
During the winter I'll have a little time to share, we should talk offline about some possibilities. I do remember having long discussions with you about dance and the body and soul connection.
We are fortunate that the interview with Matt is digital. I'll have to do a little research but we could probably stream it on the cloud and provide a link. I also wrote and recorded a kabbalah meditation and have a one hour dance set professionally mixed that is based on Kabbalah Dance, which I was creating alongside my work with TCM...
The genre of music that I played for TCM would be considered Global Electronic Dance. I particularly liked including Middle Eastern and South Asian rhythms .. ala Cheb i Sabab [musta musta]. Nusrat Fatah Ali Khan, the pakistani quawli sufi chants too. Tribal Techno might be another classification. But the magic in the sets were the intentionality of the tracks, knowing when, what and where to play, somewhat eclectic.
Music is energy...you can learn a technique, but at some point the mixes turn into the artistry and DJ's spiritual connection with their inner muse... When dance is your prayer form, the music is the vehicle to letting go and at some point allowing 'the dance' to dance you, opening to your inner muse. This is what causes a shift in your being [via transformativa]
If you want to experience an indigenious approach, look into Yoruban ritual. The drum is the vehicle to take you on the dance journey and into a trance state.
Comment by Nicole Porcaro on October 18, 2011 at 10:22am Yeay Yehudit! I remember your radio show! I think I have some well worn cassette tapes of your sets I recorded off the radio... Way pre-computer! You brought the "mustta mustta"!
Do you have a digital version of your interview with Matt? That would be great to share. Here is also a recording of Matt talking about TCM in Detroit, MI this summer to a group of 2,000 folks - audio link
What's the name for the genre of music you play? I love your style! ...and your stimulating an idea for a discussion topic I'm curious about ; )
