Gaylord Noyce, who died in August, was my wonderful seminary advisor, and we did a reading course together on Reform Spirituality. Yes, I learned, even Protestants (now I stay away from the label) are allowed – encouraged - to have a spiritual life. We are permitted to plod along the twisted roads of spiritual awakening and times of near despair, but with a difference. Instead of sitting at the feet of a Spiritual Master who tells you what’s wrong with you and how to mend yourself, you take a walk with a friend. So, I learned about Anamcara which transformed my thinking about spirituality.

To me, it’s about walking our path next to someone who is also on the way – not creeping along ten steps behind someone smarter and more powerful, and armed with the tools of shame and humiliation. And I get this.

When I spent some time working with Sister Brigit Cavanaugh,
in North Dakota, I told her I did not want spiritual direction. I wanted a friend. And she reminded me that as an Irish girl herself
she was quite familiar with the Gaelic, anamcara.

And I really do understand about friendship, real solid deep friendship, which is beyond time and place. So here I am.

Celtic spirituality, being of those roots, is of great comfort to me. I'd love to join a group journeying to visit ancient Celtic sites in the British Isles.

Tony, your books, blogs, facebooks, etc. are a real blessing to me. I don't know how often you are on this particular site. I know some sites (like Facebook) for me can be a real distraction. It seems to me that you are like those monks and sages of old who go way out somewhere where there is less chatter, etc. and only occasionally do you get back to "town" so to speak. So when you get a chance to come to "town" come here and say hello. I will say hello to you on Facebook. Blessings to You and Bee (is she still visiting here in America?)

Dear All, I have been busy during this spring summer period creating a spiritual space in the garden which I am falling deeply in love with. Storytelling has also talken up sometime. I did an interview with a Californian web radio called New Paradigms for a New World. It includes poetry and storytelling and info about why the Anamcara Experience was setup. Here is the link. The show is called Anam cara would you believe.
Hope you enjoy.

Blessings

Hmmm haven't heard of that one. I'll need to look it up. Thanks for the tip.

I am a J Phillip Newell fan as well. What do folks think of John O'Donahue who wrote a book entitled, "Anamcara", which I own, am reading in bits and pieces and am enjoying.

If you haven't checked out Tony's website about the anamcara experience (see above under "information"), which I just did, you'll find out a lot more about what the anamcara experience is.

When George asked what Soul Friendship means to us, I wrote Great question, George! As for me... I would like to find people that I can trust with my soul. People that learn that they can trust me also. The agape love the Greeks wrote about; the Noble Friend the Chinese discuss. When I love someone so much that I risk losing them as a friend because I always speak the truth.
It seems to me that the more I love someone, the more I can understand them. And the more I seek to understand people, the more I can love them. The more I give, the more I have to give. I like the idea of giving my life away, but would like better discernment in the giving.

Perhaps Shoshin would be a better site for my response?? What do you think, fellow Soul Friends?
